Arctic Dwarf Birch - Betula nana

New to our inventory, the Arctic Dwarf Birch is a popular bonsai tree so we know that it will do well in our miniature gardens. The growth rate if left unpruned will be more shrub-like. It can eventually be shaped into a tree-form. Prune back any new shoots to 2-3 leaves after the new flushes of growth throughout the growing season.

Note: Plants are deciduous. The leaves will turn red or yellow in the fall before dropping and come back in the spring.

  • Round, slightly toothed leaves
  • Growth rate is estimated at 2 to 4" per year
  • Prune back new shoots to 2-3 leaves after new flushes of growth throughout the growing season
  • Catkin-like flowers in spring (like small pussy willows)
  • Cold hardy Zones 2 to 7, or to -50F (!)
  • Heat Zones 5-1
  • Full sun to dappled shade, avoid hot, summer sun if it is in a container
