Dwarf Wisteria - Millettia japonica 'Hime Fuji'
A Dwarf Wisteria for the miniature garden that we've been testing for the last 5 years here at our studios (shown in the blue pot in the photos.) It's still new, the information on it is still scarce. Apparently it makes a great Bonsai subject.
We find this rare gem is well behaved and low-maintenance. The dwarf Wisteria will eventually grow into a bushy plant, but it looks like a shrub in miniature with it's bare legs and leafy canopy. It grows much slower than listed in our Seattle climate.
The leaves look like the full-sized Wisteria. Can be trimmed and slough off any dead branches in spring. Note that it doesn't flower but it is still cute as a button. Don't let it dry out in between watering sessions. If you are in a hot region and planting it in-ground, plant in part sun or eastern exposure, to help keep the soil evenly damp.
- Lovely green colored, tiny leaves
- Growth rate is about 10 to 12"/yr (listed by grower, grows much slower for us)
- Globe shaped
- Cold hardy Zones 8 or to 10F - move it indoors for the winter
- Heat Zones estimated: 7-10
- Full sun to part sun, avoid hot, summer afternoon sun if it is in a container
- Trim long branches to retain shape
- Regular water
- Pot is 4" in diameter
- An outdoor plant but can be kept inside for the colder, winter months
